Daytime Sleepiness and Dementia
Studies suggest that daytime sleepiness is a risk factor for cognitive decline or dementia. A cross-sectional study found increased beta-amyloid accumulation in middle-aged adults without dementia with greater daytime somnolence. Correction of sleep disorders is important to reduce risk factors for beta-amyloid accumulation. Interestingly, most obesity researchers now agree that sleep is the second most important factor beyond diet for maintaining healthy body weight.
