Do you have Iron Deficiency Anaemia?
In 2001, discovery of the peptide hormone hepcidin offered critical insight into how iron deficiency arises in patients with inflammatory disease; despite adequate intake of iron and no overt loss from bleeding.
Under inflammatory conditions, serum iron levels fall due to iron trapping within macrophages and liver cells, in addition to reduced absorption by enterocytes, depleting circulating iron.
Addressing inflammation with low iron levels may therefore be the key to replenishing this important mineral.
