Pregnant or trying to conceive?
Why you should take a multivitamin before and during pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond…..
¨ To assist with fertility management when trying to conceive or stay pregnant
¨ Pregnancy is a extremely taxing time for the body
¨ During the first trimester especially you may not be able to eat a wide variety of foods as you normally would due to morning sickness, which sometimes these nutritional deficiencies, such as low levels of magnesium and vitamin B6, may be partly responsible for making the nausea and discomfort experienced during pregnancy even worse. Studies have shown that increasing these two vital nutrients can significantly reduce the symptoms of morning sickness.
Key nutrients for fertility include: Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, Calcium, B12, B6, Folic acid, Vitamin C, Omega-3 fats.
Coenzyme Q10
The normal curve of plasma CoQ10 levels rises with each trimester and there is in increased requirement for antioxidants during labour. CoQ10 reduces the risk of developing Pre eclampsia , reduced spontaneous abortions and reduced oxidative stress in the Mother.
Vitamin D
Important for the absorption of minerals, and development of baby’s skeletal system, immune system and foetal growth and an increased risk of schizophrenia in the baby. Also, vitamin D deficiency in the Mother lead to risk of preterm birth, elevated risk of C-section and elevated pain during delivery.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
DHA in fish oil, reduces the risk of postnatal depression, ‘baby brain’, pre eclampsia, low birth weight, and pre term delivery. It improves brain and eye development in the baby and thus, hand-eye co-ordination, higher intelligence and attention spans. Decreased levels of DHA are correlated with autism, ADHD, eczema and asthma.
