Cold, Flu & Allergies A runny nose watery eyes, sore throat, sneezing and coughing are some of the most common symptoms of a cold. But it can be confusing as these may also be symptoms of Allergies.
However usually a cold is accompanied by fever and Allergies are not. Another simple indicator is to check the mucus that’s coming out of your (or your child’s nose). Clear, water mucus may be due to allergies while thick, green mucus may be indicative of a cold.
If your child has eczema, there’s a good chance she also has allergies. Also if your child has allergies and eczema, they are also at increased risk of developing asthma. If one or both parents have allergies, your child in at increased risk.
Cold and flu symptoms ordinarily clear up in about 2 weeks but allergies can hang around for much longer, such as seasonal or the entire year. Things such as dust mites or mould
Food intolerances & Allergies
Food allergies may trigger asthma symptoms in some people. A true food allergy involves an immune response and food intolerance produces symptoms without involving the immune system.
Allergic Asthma– Same triggers that set off your allergies -pollen, etc, may also set off your asthma. This is also true of food allergies, although relatively uncommon.
Food allergy symptoms include: hives, rash, nausea/vomiting or diarrhoea, coughing, wheezing & Anaphylaxis, throat swells constricting the airway.
Research has found Junk food may increase a child’s risk of asthma and allergies. Food preservatives are also known to trigger asthma attacks in some people, particularly sulfites, found in foods like shrimp, dried fruits and wine. They include:
Sodium bisulfite, Potassium bisulfite, Sodium metabisulfite, Potassium metabisulfite and Sodium sulphite.
