Pica behaviour is the craving and purposive consumption of substances not defined as food (such as dirt or stones) and may be a sign of iron deficiency. While this behaviour is universal, it is particularly prevalent among pregnant women. Recent research has found that women who engaged in pica behaviour during their pregnancy were almost three times more likely to be iron deficient than women who did not.
