A 10 year study reveals that patients with regular Practitioner contact and support lose more weight and are more likely to sustain weight loss long-term.

Experiencing weight-related stigma causes physical, psychological and behavioural changes that make it harder to lose weight, by increasing cortisol, which effects self control and lowers self esteem.  Lowered self esteem may result in patients avoiding health supportive activities, such as going to the gym or consulting a healthcare Practitioner.  Insulin resistance, due to poor blood glucose control in obesity, creates greater emotional  reactivity, low mood and blood glucose control.  Researchers propose this is due to neuroinflammation and brain cell death.
