Iodine Deficiency
At 12 weeks gestation, maternal subclinical iodine deficiency is associated with increased rates of stillbirths, spontaneous abortions, congenital abnormalities, maternal goitre & a leading cause of preventable intellectual impairment .
Hypothyroidism in children causes the following:
- Poorer school performance
- Reduced achievement motivation
- Higher incidence of learning disabilities
- Hearing impairment
- Reduced mean I.Q. scores by 13.5 points in children
- Increased risk of ADHD in offspring subsequent to maternal iodine deficiency
- Hypothyroidism in Adults
- Increased risk of autoimmune thyroid conditions
- Increased risk of thyroid cancer
- Increased risk of breast & endometrial cancer
