At 12 weeks gestation, maternal subclinical iodine  deficiency is associated with  increased rates of stillbirths, spontaneous abortions, congenital abnormalities, maternal goitre & a leading cause of preventable intellectual impairment .

Hypothyroidism in children causes the following:

  • Poorer school performance
  • Reduced achievement motivation
  • Higher incidence of learning disabilities
  • Hearing impairment
  • Reduced mean I.Q. scores by 13.5 points in children
  • Increased risk of ADHD in offspring  subsequent to maternal iodine  deficiency
  • Hypothyroidism in Adults
  • Increased risk of autoimmune thyroid conditions
  • Increased risk of thyroid cancer
  • Increased risk of breast & endometrial cancer
